A male reader, anonymous, writes (30 October 2009):

She wants a promise that it's not a one night stand.

And I think this is exactly why women like the character in the lyrics get screwed & used so much. Spoken promises don't mean a damn thing coming from a smooth-talking horny guy.

You are taking the lyrics too literally, later in the poem she says that loving her is free. She is saying metaphorically that he has to "buy" her, meaning that she is expensive, elegant of value, and she is not going to give her most intimate self, either physical or emotional if he isn't in it for real, for love and relationship.

Geez, not everything is to be taken literally, but then as you are a man I can understand why you don't get that, so many men don't.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (30 October 2009):

But you pay the bill

‘Cause that’s the deal

If you wanna ride

Just name your price

Don’t play cheap with your heart

Don’t make a bet

If you can’t write the check

For me, for me

‘Cause I can be bought but you’ll pay the cost

If you can afford me

If you want me

I’m not a piece of ass

A one night stand

A storage shed

So she wants the guy to pay to get into a relationship with her. Money for relationship. Money for sex is an even more degrading thing to a guy. How is this money for relationship not a degrading thing to a guy?

A reader, anonymous, writes (30 October 2009):

Yup, she is saying she has value, she knows he wants to have sex with her, but can he be strong enough to be her man by stepping up and claiming her as the one he wants to be with forever perhaps. She wants love the real deal and she is worth it and will wait until she meets a man that can reach for the top girl, the cherry on top of the tree because she is the best girl, not a cheap easy piece of ass.
