You'd be surprised how strong and flexible your hymen actually is. Like you i used to horse ride, used tampons and had been experimenting before actually having sex, but it still hurt when i did lose my virginity.
I bled a little too, but try not to worry, the more tense you are, the more painful/uncomfortable it'll be. The biggest thing about losing your virginity is to stay relaxed and take things very very slowly.

I really never understood the whole fuzz about the hymen. I guess I didn't have a hymen to break the first time I had sex as I didn't bleed. But I've bled from sex other times when the guy was just too big! First time sex can be ok and not painful even with a hymen. And it can be terribly painful for those without hymens as well. Because your body is not used to having something so big inside of it. A friend of mine had really bad belly aches the following day after loosing her virginity.
It hurts mainly not because a hymen breaks. It hurts because something big is being pressed into something too tight. People teach you that it hurts because the hymen breaks, and you bleed because the hymen breaks. Well in my case that's not been true, and to other girls I know that's not been correct either. It may be true to some, but to my knowledge hymen has less to do with it, and the penis in proportion to your vagina has everything to do with it. As in if he's got a small one it'll hurt less.

A penis is a lot bigger than both a finger or a tampon (well I assume your boyfriends one is hehe) So there is every chance of pain.
