Because in a vast majority of cases when people say " I don't want a serious relationship " what they mean is " I don't want a serious relationship WITH YOU ".

Some people genuinely don't want anything serious with anyone at the current time.
Some just don't want anything serious with "that" particular person...
Nothing wrong with making sure you've picked the right person to settle down with though.
