A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I am wondering, do you believe that everything happens for a reason? I am getting myself down, because at work I was promoted about 6-months ago. My current employer wanted to extend my promotion, however my former employer (substantive position) disagreed and is pulling me back to a lower paying job (about $100 less per week). Now they have to replace me at my promotion job, and I am afraid that I'll be replaced by someone better. They were really happy with my performance, and I only assume that's why they wanted to extend me. But my boss said not. I am really starting to get depressed. I worked so hard to get that promotion, and now I am just being shafted.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (2 February 2012):

It is unfortunate that there was some disagreement as to whether you should have had that promotion. Certainly, anyone in your position would be unhappy if they were given a promotion and then it was taken away. Have you ever had any issues with the boss that disagreed with the promotion? It seems very strange that they would decide to revoke the promotion. I would advise sitting down with the manager and discussing what you would need to do to get that promotion again, as well as why you were bumped back down. Nevertheless, remember that no matter what happens, you always have the option of leaving your place of employment and working for someone else.
