I brought a girl but i never really knew her well as she was my sister's friend, but when i first saw her she looked beautiful.  Try with something small like saying you really enjoyed the time at the formal and would she like to meet up and catch up sometime, it has been a long time since you last saw her so you'll have to take things slowly and carefully to make sure the memories from that formal are what you remember and not just you feel your missing out on something you have built up over the months since then.
