Also my breasts have started to develop since the past 3-5 months, maybe half a year.Once I had a few dots of brown in my underwear, but only once; then a couple of times I had a yellowy discharge. One time it was yellow and smelly, but it was OK after a few days. I don't get the weird brown thing anymore, I only had it once. But I haven't started my period yet.I'm turning 12 in December, and my mom had her period when she was thirteen. My mom didn't have cramps. My 2 sisters started when they were 11 and one of them had cramps. My mom didn't and neither did one of my sisters [have cramps] but lately I've been having cramps, usually at night. I heard that periods come a year or two after whitish discharge starts?I was wondering if these are 'signs' of my period coming? I'm not sure. If these are, is there a sort of estimated time?

I remember the day i started my periods - in fact, it's really the only way i remember my mate's birthday. It was November 11.Anyway, mine came as a complete shock and I had very little warning - thankfully it was very light. I get cramps with my period but also i get cramps from not eating ennough at lunch and doing 1 1/2 hours of ballet, and eating too much. It sounds like you've done your homework, btw, so you probably know that whitish substance is natural and perfectly normal and a useful way to find out if your underwears clean or not if your rooms a tip...Well, I think it's time you put a couple of panty liners in your locker or shcool bag (You can get very small ones and can put them in an envelope addressed to your parents if you are embarresed) to avoid any nasty accidents, not that your periods will be heavy but you might stain a nice pair of knickers! I hope you feel OK and if you get any cramps then you should take some calpul or Iboprofen (that's what i use) with plenty of water and have an early night. You should tell your mum when you get your first one - she'll get you sorted with pads etc.Hope you have a happy time of it - Jellyxxx

I can't remember any signs before my period came, but I think the brownish spots were probably a premature breaking of part of your hymen. This can happen from all sorts of physical activities, such as bike-riding, horse-riding or anything that stretches or rubs against that area. I had the same when I was about 10, from horse-riding, I'm sure.
I started when I was 13 and three quarters, which was later than a lot of my friends. I honestly don't remember anything much apart from that the first couple of periods weren't bad and were spaced quite wide apart.
Try not to think about it too much - it WILL happen!

Then after the 1st few you'll wish you didn't have periods for about the next 40 years.
I didn't start my periods till I was 15 which seemed terrbly late. I fibbed to all my pals at school that I had started because they said they had.
Patience is a virtue my dear
