reader, anonymous, writes (20 August 2009): I think you should set yourself free. Get some legal advice and each step will give you confidence to leave him. He sounds pretty awful from the small amount you have described.

 Have you made an appointment with a divorce attorney? They would be your best guide to ending the marriage.
If you would like to try to save the marriage, I would expect that you both would need to go into marriage counseling to see if it can be salvaged.
