It does not hurt when you take it out though, if you are gentle when pulling! But cos it hurt me when I first used it... I am going to keep trying, apparently after your first go it does not feel uncomfortable and you get used to them after a couple of hours. Just make sure you are comfortable and relaxed when inserting the tampon. And that the tampon is suitable for your blood flow and your size.

I would also seriously suggest that as much as you hate them take some pads with you on your trip too, as a little emergency back-up plan will never hurt you. DO get the kind with the applicator as they are easier to use and I would also recommend purchasing some nice smelling baby-wipes to take with you so you can feel fresher anyway (I find them a total must have for any camping trip, period or not). Also, by experimenting at home and getting used to using them you will become more relaxed about actually inserting them, as sometimes pain can be caused by you being tense.
I will be honest with you, although so many posters have answered that they think tampons are great, liberating, etc, they are not always good for everyone (hence the advice to try them before you go and to take pads with you as well). I personally find that they make any backache that I get during my period much worse and others have found them to be uncomfortable, but don't let this cause you to think that there is something wrong with you if you can't use them - there isn't! It's just proof that we are all built a different way and are sometimes better suited to different things.
Always try and have clean hands when using them and please, please PLEASE read the instructions and the health warnings that come with them about how often to change them and what physical symptoms to be aware of should your body disagree with them. I really don't want to scare you, but sometimes tampons can cause you to become very ill with Toxic Shock Syndrome, which is why it is important to be aware of how you use them, how often you change them and what symptoms you should seek help for. It's RARE but still be AWARE. If in doubt speak to a female relative, doctor, chemist or a school nurse for more information or about any worries that you may have.
Finally, I hope you have a great trip and that you are able to find a solution that works well for you.

What i suggest is try doing it as u get out the shower or bath when theres a bit more moisture to help. If you don't put it in right first time you'll soon know about it and only do it once! it wont hurt so much but be uncomfortable. Try squattin down and then push it up as far as it will go, thats the most important part usually a full fingers length.
The first time will feel a bit weird but once your muscles relax and the tampon more saturated you won't feel it at all. When it comes to removing, wait till it starts to feel a bit heavy and like a bubbling sensation, you'll recognise it straight away, just sit and the toilet and it will come out with a small pull, strange feeling at first I'll admit but not painful.
You'll probably find you actually forget your on your period and therefore dont hold urself in uncomfortable postions and ur muscles will relax more and in turn wont have as many muscles cramps. They really are a god send!
good luck x x

After I explained to my mother the situation, and lets say, life since that time of the month is wonderful. I suggest you get the plastic applicator, they seem to go in better. All the brand names seem the same to me, so just go with what you are comfortable with. Try using a lubricant if you are still to uptight. All the Luck in the world. Welcome to Womanhood!!

Ahhh tampons, a womans best friend. They do seem to be a little scary at first but trust me they aren't that bad, in fact they are wonderful. Lol. Well since it is your first time I suggest you buy tampons with a plastic applicator, I find them a lot easier. Don't freak out when ur putting it in just relax and make sure u get the tip a little lubricated with (I know this sounds a little gross) the blood and slowly slide it in taking as long as u want in any position u find comfortable and a little less painful (it will only hurt a bit the first time...maybe) For more information on things like this I would go to beinggirl.com its a awesome site that will answer all your questions about these kind of issues. I used it a lot when I was younger. Enjoy being a teen. :)

They aren't that scary, and I personally worship them as a lifesaver.
There is not that much variation when it comes to type. You have your light, regular and heavy varieties - you simply choose depending on your flow. So far as brands go, they're pretty much all the same.
Inserting it is a bit daunting the first time, but it gets easier once you know what you're doing. All you do is relax, grab the string at the base of the tampon (it's best to touch the cotton part as little as possible), then slowly push it up into your vagina. Try inserting it at about a 45 degree angle - but you can adjust this angle depending on the shape of your own body. Once you've got it through the entrance it'll pretty much adjust itself anyway. Push it in about a finger length, or until it won't go any further. Then just leave it, and you'll pretty much forget it's there.
It's best to change them every few hours or so, depending on your flow. If it's saturated and needs changing, you'll definitely know.
All you do to change it is relax and pull on the string until it comes out. If it is saturated and ready to be changed, it will come out easily. It will feel odd at first, but it's not painful. If the tampon is not saturated, it will take a little more force to pull it out and you might feel a bit of tension. It's a bit uncomfortable but not painful. It might get like this towards the end of your period when the flow is lighter, so perhaps use pads during the last couple of days.
Don't leave them in overnight, and be sure to remove the last one at the end of your period.
Hope this helped. =)

Ok I was 11 the first time I used one. The first one I used hurt so bad because I broke my hymen with it. My advice is to go to a rite aid or another drug store and get the light flow tampons since they will be thinner and if they aren't big enough for your flow then up grade. I love tampons and hate pads as well. But I do warn that the first tampon will hurt very very bad. As far as getting stuck they only get stuck if your flow is too light then they aren't wet enough to come out and hurt. Just don't change them to often or they will get stuck.
