Hi there. Why not just keep it simple and start by talking about swimming. Maybe ask him he got into it or if he wants to pursue it professionally etc. See where that takes you because if he is happy to chat about that then he'll more that likely be happy to chat about other things.You could maybe compliment him on his swim style/skill What ever happens just relax and have fun.

If he’s your age, go for it. If not, let it go. Just find a time when a conversation would naturally start, like waiting around before/afterwards. “Hey, how long have you been swimming here?” and try to carry on a short conversation about your joint hobby. Be patient and calm.
