Id just stay away from his work or school. but to surprise him? you should make up some april fools joke and have him meet someone at a hotel (which is you, but he doesnt know)... give him directions to the hotel, then say call me when you get there so I can confirm to the man youll be meeting him (maybe a meeting regarding his job or some life event, make something up but so that he'll buy it)... then once he gets to the hotel, have him call you to get your room number lol and go up and have him open the door to a perhaps naked but thoughtful woman :)

 If you have a key to his place and he is comfortable with you being there without him, I'd sneak in before he got there and get naked except for one of his tshirts and greet him at the door! Don't forget to give him a BJ, and bang him like you haven't seen him in 3 months. Also, have cupcakes and/or cookies homebaked and on the counter for him. A bday card youve made yourself, even though it sounds lame, is extremely thoughtful. If you know him well enough, you'll know his favorite music, make a playlist on your ipod or a mix cd and have it playing when he comes in. After the fun sexy stuff, take him out to his favorite restaurant and DONT LET HIM PAY!!!

 Make him a home cooked meal, or if you can't cook to save your life, buy take out. The way to 95% of mens' hearts is via the stomach. The other 4% need Video games and that last 1% need help :)
