please help me. I need to lose weight so bad. I need to know the best excercise routines I can do at home (not run around the neighborhood, that's embarrassing) and the best foods to eat and times. and just be really specific. This boy I'm in love with really inspired me to do this but I have no clue what to do! I want to lose 50 pounds by the end of summer.

excerise.

count your calories each day..

NO MORE than that..

it works.

drink lots of water.

If you want to stay in the house to excerise you could invest in a Wii fit, I have lost so much by it because you see how far you have to go and end up fighting for it. A good idea about food is just don't buy tons of junk, eat what you want on 1day of the week, and buy the food from a little shop in individual packs. Not 12 packs or soemthing. Then for the rest of the week you buy low calorie things that you enjoy but would ultimately be healthier. Of course after working out you may find yourself getting heavier but looking better, but that's just because muscle ways more than fat. Good luck :)

k_c100 agony auntOk well at your current weight 50lbs is probably achieveable, if you make a major change to your lifestyle then you could expect to lose 4lbs a week (probably more like 7-8lbs a week in the first few weeks). Basically the larger you are, the faster it comes off at first. So for the first few weeks you will probably be pretty pleased when you see the results on the scales but bear in mind it wont continue like that forever, weight loss often slows down and sometimes levels out for a while, you have to be prepared for this and strong enough to keep going even if you stop seeing the results on the scales.

I suggest changing your diet first and then introducing exercise once you have lots around 14lbs. Diet alone should be enough for you to lose some weight, and then once that first 14lbs has gone you will need to bring in exercise to maintain your weight loss. The golden rule to weight loss is to eat less and move more! It is that simple - whatever is going into your mouth needs to be burnt off otherwise it will turn into fat.

I'm not sure what your current eating habits are, maybe if you let us know what you are currently eating and I could give you an idea of what is good and what is bad? You need to see this not as a diet but as a change of lifestyle - dont put yourself onto some silly restrictive diet because you wont be able to maintain it. You need to make changes that will last forever and ones that you will be able to live with for the rest of your life.

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (18 May 2009):

There is no specific magic formula to losing weight. It's not about doing set things at set times. Sorry but your body is just not that exact.

Cut out things with high fat and high sugar. (read the label)

Eat LOTS AND LOTS of healthy stuff so your body never feels hungry and then it won't mind burning into the fat you have. If you starve yourself then it will panic.

Basically if you are burning up more energy than you are taking in then you will lose weight.

The two golden rules are

1. Eat lots, but only healthy stuff like fruit and veg.

2. Move.

Moving any muscle in your body burns energy. Even breathing takes up a little bit. So go for a long walk, take some dogs and play with them if you don't want to go alone. Dance, put on some Britney in your bedroom and bounce like a crazy thing. Play in the back yard, hula hoop, and skip and fight your brothers. Just find a way to get your heart rate up and breathe more. Wash cars, do housework, mow lawns, dig weeds, plant some tomatoes.

Remember that you need to lose weight till you are healthy and happy. Not till some boy likes you. Do this to improve your chances by all means but do it for you, not for him.

Good Luck!! xx

k_c100 agony aunt50 pounds is fairly extreme - are you sure you need to lose that much weight? A realistic weight loss target should be 1-2 pounds a week, so by the end of August (around 15 weeks away) you should lose about 30 pounds. This would mean you drop over 2 dress sizes and would have a huge impact on the way you look. I know you may want to lose it faster but it has been proven scientifically that if you lose weight rapidly, you will end up putting all that weight back on just as quickly. So doing it slowly and steadily will mean that the weight stays off for good.

You havent mentioned your height or current weight so it is difficult for me to say what you need to do to try and lose the weight. However here are some general tips that you can try:

1. Cut out processed foods - no ready meals (microwave meals), no food you just throw in the oven etc....all food needs to be freshly prepared.

2. Cut out junk food - no more takeaways, pizza, burgers, chinese, curry etc....again all food needs to be freshly made at home.

3. Cut out white starchy carbs - no more white bread, white pasta or white rice. These foods have no nutritional benefit to you so swap them for the brown versions - brown bread, brown pasta etc.

4. Eat breakfast! Make sure breakfast is a pretty big meal, then have a good size lunch, and a small tea. This way you are using the calories in the right order - if you eat most of your calories at night you wont burn them off therefore you will put on weight. So breakfast should involve carbs - wholegrain brown toast is a good idea, as well as cerals and fruit. Lunch needs carbs too, especially if you are going to exercise. Then your dinner should ideally have no carbs or only a tiny amount if you feel you cant have a meal without them. Live by this rule "Breakfast like a king, Lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper" (old English word for poor person!)

5. Exercise 3-4 times a week, involving some weights and some cardio. I know you dont want to go running but you must do cardio to lose weight, and unless your parents have some gym machines at home then you are going to struggle to do cardio in your house. If you dont like running then swimming is a brilliant form of exercise - it burns loads of calories and works all your muscles in your body. If you dont feel happy going swimming, then maybe try another sport like tennis, squash etc. Cardio is the best way to burn calories and fat - it needs to be done to lose weight. Buy a skipping rope - you will find this pretty hard if you are unfit but it burns loads of calories and will really give you a good workout!

6. Do weights! Buy some hand held weights that you can do at home and look up some exercises online, or the weights may even come with a leaflet for some ideas for you. Weights are brilliant for weight loss because muscle burns calories even at rest, therefore if your body has a higher muscle mass than fat, it will burn more calories just by sitting around doing nothing! Having muscle increases your base metabolic rate - this is how many calories your body burns just at rest. So it is very important to do weights as well as calories - it not only burns calories but gives your body a nice toned shape too. If you are severly overweight then losing weight will leave you with loose skin - weights help to minimise the risk of saggy skin. Loose skin will only happen if you lose weight too fast - so please dont go on an extreme diet to lose the 50lbs rapidly otherwise you will have lots of other problems to contend with.

7. Eat more protein! If you are working out with weights, your body will need more protein to repair the muscles. Eat lean protein likes fish and chicken - these dont have a high fat content but provide lots of vitamins and essential nutrients.

Make sure you dont do anything drastic - losing weight slowly is the best way to achieve the look you want. I have been "dieting" for the last 3 months, and while I have only lost 14 pounds, it is staying off even when I have "bad" days (days when I go out for a meal, or have a pizza etc). So my weight is coming off slowly but it is staying off, and I am so much fitter than I was before (I go to the gym 3 times a week) and I have a much better shape to my figure.

Losing weight is hard, and there will be weeks where you put weight on, and weeks where you lose loads. You have to be prepared for the ups and downs - in your first week or 2 you will probably lose quite a lot of weight, but then it will slow down to 1-2lbs a week. Then some weeks you might put weight on - this can be down to gaining weight in muscle if you are working out. The key is not to get upset if you have a bad week, and not to give up. Having goals is important, but being realistic is important too. I cant really tell you if 50lbs for you is realistic seen as you dont give your weight and height, but in my opinion for someone of your age it sounds like quite a lot.

If you need any further advice or tips please let me know and I will try and help as best I can!
