I want to have sex but I fear getting pregnant

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

i am currently seeing a guy who is great. the problem is my parents don't know I've been seeing him. I am 20 years old and currently live with my parents who feel that i should just be friends with this guy. i have done things with him but we haven't actually had sex yet although we have talked about it. he has been very understanding and hasn't pressured me even though he wants to have sex. i want to have sex but i'm afraid that there's a very good chance that i could end up getting pregnant- unplanned pregnancy is a very high risk in my family. all of the women in my family have gotten pregnant even though they practiced safe sex and were on the pill. i'm afraid that if i get pregnant i will have to tell my parents and will upset them. i'm unsure about what i should do. any help would be greatly appreciated.

its great that you're thinking about this. many girls don't think about consequences and rush into things. as for your parents- you need to start living your own life and stop worrying about what they think. it won't be too much longer until you're out on your own. it's good to respect them but you need to make your own decisions and live your own life- explain to them how you feel or you can keep trying to keep it a secret from them and continue worrying but eventually they're going to find out anyways.

If you go on the pill and are really careful to take it at the same time every day and if you ever forget, don't have sex for a week or so of taking the pill again, and always use a condom as well then I really doubt you would get pregnant!! I know they say nothing is 100 % foolproof, but using multiple methods of birth control will make you very safe. Personally, I've been using only the pill for 5 years with my guy and have never had a pregnancy scare.
