State your case to your friends and see if they would be okay with it. If they're not then it might not be a good idea to break it. As you said a promise is a promise and a person is only as good as their word.
Your boyfriend should understand that you made a promise and respect that, besides there are plenty of other you can do sexually together until you become a freshman.
