So_Very_Confused agony auntif you wanna to to the gym and like the idea and think you will use it then go for it.

I loved the gym and have stopped for now due to finances and time... but I can tell you that most folks that go to the gym to work out are not focusing on YOU but are the center of their own worlds....

I know what you mean. In every fitness center I have been to, the gym was filled with men and no women. I could never go there. But there are women only gyms. Do some research and maybe you can find one of those in your city.

N91 agony auntI used to be worried about going and wondering what all the huge guys in there would be thinking of a puny kid like me going in and you know what? It was absolutely stupid of me to do so...nothhings ever happened or been said and I'm not in the best shape of my life.

Just knuckle down and get into it, if people want to stare, let them, take it as a compliment that you look good.

mammaboo agony auntI am old school when it comes to gyms and i understand a gym being a guys place to work out. Especially if there are alot of free weights. If this is the only gyn you can join near you then it will help if you have a little routine going for yourself. This will keep you distracted from who ever else is in there. If its more fat burning exersise you need use the cardio machines. so the bikes the rowers the treadmill and some floor exersices for toning. Its good to use your Ipod or whatever you use for music for your personal use. This too helps you shut off from distraction. If you need more help email me!

A male reader, Daniel the love doctor United States +, writes (26 November 2011):

Daniel the love doctor agony auntWell I think that you're going to have to work through your shyness- and understand that most people are at the gym for the same reason(s) you are. And though they may look, they'll be pretty much concerned with how they look. You may also want to bring your ipod (if you have one)- or any other device that would help take your thoughts off of your surroundings.

Here are a few additional options.....

#1. You can go to other fitness centers. I'm not sure if you have a Curves, Jenny Craig, Lucille Roberts, or any other gym where there's a high female ratio, but those are a few to look into.

#2. Work out at home. Order your own equipment if you can, order some workout DVDS such as: Taebo,Denis Austin's Boot Camp, the collection of Women's Health workout dvds, etc. And be sure to incorporate a good diet plan to go along with your fitness regimen. A good one to use is Weight Watchers. Other people may have other suggestions as well.

Good luck to you!

tennisstar88 agony auntCouldn't you skip the gym membership and buy workout videos to do in the privacy of your own home? Or scour the paper for Pilates, Zumba, aerobics, and yoga classes?? Those will be filled with females and maybe a couple of males.

Another tip is I have anxiety (especially in the gym around so many people), so I plug in my Ipod or whatever mP3 player you have and zone out while running on the treadmill. I tune out people and what's going on around me. Try that!

I think you should really try push ups and stuff like that. Not as a deadly routine but as a light work out. If you really want to go to gym there is no problem. If guys stare at you , you dont have to give a single shit to that! Let em stare at you. You need to feel good and they cant be a hurdle. go gym!!
