You could also attend arts festivals and exhibitions. It is a great place to meet interesting people. Some of them will be o their own, or with friends. It is easy to strike up a conversation while admiring a painting, or waiting in line for the theater door to open, or chatting to the person sitting next to you before the play/independent movie starts. You can exchange phone number first, or ask if they want to chat about the performance/movie/painting/etc over coffee next door to the venue.
Trust me, it is fun!

Join a club and that way you will find people with a similar interest as yourself. Or simply call someone who you wouldn't normally go out with and ask if they want to catch up. X
