I left high school with a double a level in art and design but now I'm looking for a job art is laughed at. I've been to connections and the job centre and told them that my first choice of job would be belly dance as I've done it for over 5 years and my second choice would be art related as the sixth form course I did was of such I high standard that if I had chosen uni I could have missed the foundation year, but both said well we'll put you down as admin jobs and waitress. Now after working in an office I hate it, my dancing means I get travel around and move about and so does art I don't cope well in an office environment. Has any one else had this problem or does anyone have any ideas as to what kind of jobs I could go for? Any ideas or tips would be welcome, thanks

k_c100 agony auntTeaching might be your best bet - belly dancing teacher, art teacher etc. You could even think about becoming a community worker, teaching underpriviledged kids art etc.

Perhaps think about working in an art gallery, at least that way you would be close to something you are passionate about.

How about graphic design? Or illustrating? They are more practical uses for artistic talents.

Or if you want to stick with the belly dancing thing, then perhaps you could work at a gym and teach a belly dancing class? You might have to be flexible to teach other classes too, but at least you would get to do what you enjoy.

And one final piece of advice - do not go to Connections or the job centre, they could not care less about what you want to do in life, they simply care about making sure you are not on benefits. They will try and push you into any old job they can find you, regardless of whether or not it fits your skills.

If you urgently need a job for the money, then find part time work anywhere you can (dont be fussy, this could be in a supermarket, clothes shop, restuarant etc). This will keep you ticking over until you decide what you want to do with your life. Something like teaching will require you to go back to education, you will have to go to University. Whereas working in a gym might be a bit easier and you may only have to do a short course.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Hi thanks for your advise, I was going to be a belly dance teacher but now I'm held in a contract and have to wait 12months before I can actually teach on my own. I think voluntary work is a good idea I never gave it a thought. One of my main problems as well is my dislike of university although I know there are some collage courses that offer the same I was hoping to avoid education for a while (suppose I'm a bit picky really) thanks for all you good ideas :-)

A female reader, anonymous, writes (25 April 2012):

To be honest, jobs in the arts are hard to come by. Most artists hold down "regular" (i.e. boring) day jobs like office work, waiting tables etc. to pay the bills, and do their art on the side. Others save up money first so they can then go full time for awhile in their art.

I think a good job would be to be an art teacher for a school. This is a 'real job' in that you get a stable paycheck, and you can still do art.

Many artistic people cobble together part time jobs to pay the bills while allowing time for their art.

it all depends on how much money you need to pay your bills. if you're independently wealthy you have a lot more opportunities!

oldbag agony auntHi

Depends where you live or if you would relocate for jobs. You could try Cruise Ships, hotels. The competitions high and the jobs rare. You could try doing your own Act belly dancing or join a theatre group, to get experience on your CV
