To get to work, she would drive the car and park it near a bus stop to avoid highway driving. I'm not sure what changed but now she will drive anywhere. My point is that on her own it was a gradual process. As somebody else said, professional help would probably speed the process up.
Best of luck!

How about you get behind the wheel and drive?
Go into a parking lot and drive with a boyfriend or friend or family member.
You don't need to go onto the capitol beltway on your first drive. Take it easy, practice, and get over it.
Really that simple.

I was 28 before I had driving lessons. I was the last to learn in my family. In 2008, I passed. One day soon after I was driving and crunched the gears badly! Lots of people turned to look at me and it put me off driving. It put me off driving. I stopped. This year my sister and I decided to get a car together and the fear I felt when I got behind the wheel was overwhelming. I gripped the steering wheel so hard my arms hurt. Everytime my sister said we'll go driving tomorrow, I had nightmares the night before. I still get fearful now but it has lessened over time. I still need someone to sit with me but I'm slowly getting there. Like me you need to get more practice. The more you practice the more confidence you will gain.
If I can do it, believe me you can too.

Go to your doctors to and see if you can make an appointment with a psychologist. They might be able to establish where your fear of driving comes from, have you ever been in a car accident, or is there anything that you can think of makes you feel like this? There are herbal remedies you can get to calm your nerves while driving, and the more you practice the more better you will become at it, so don't give up if it is something you really want to do you can do it.
