reader, anonymous, writes (20 May 2007): something similar happened to me once, when a friend guessed that i liked him a lot. We talked about it, and we were friends for a while but then ended up falling out, but it had nothing to do with my feelins.
You do feel a bit stupid, and its a bit awkward at first, but if you were such good friends then you will both sort it out and be okay.

Knowing is definitely better than not knowing. The one you're looking for is out there, and now you can move on without spending any more energy on the person who won't return your feelings. I know it doesn't look that way right now, but you really are better off.
