 Sure, go ahead and ask, if you think it could work.
But also consider that romances with workmates can be VERY difficult, too. If things don't work out, you still have to see him every day. This could be even if he turns out to dump you and/or start seeing someone else!
Just enter this with your eyes open and then -- do what Wendyg suggests.

Thats brilliant advice and personal experiences are a great help.. I think tho that if you dont want to do the whole email thingy, you could suggest going for lunch or a drink one day??
Whats the worst that can happen? He says No and you benefit aswell as Rejection in time, makes us stronger as individuals..

 Well, I was in a situation like this a few years back. I sat like 3 desks away from the guy and found it really hard to make eye contact and all that! So anyway I dropped him an email, just a quick note to say hi, think we hit off pretty well the other night! Wouldnt mind hooking up with you again sometime if your free! but i did put at the end if you cool with it being a one off then thats cool too and didnt want that to affect our work relationship. Anyway he replied with yeah lets hook up, we dated for a while, it didnt work out but at least we gave it a chance. I wouldnt go steaming in, just do like what i did, send a mail test the water, but let him know whichever he decides your cool with even if your not, that way you wont look over possesive and at least you will know if he wants to see you again too!
