I take the Pill but not regularly at the same time. Am I still protected?

A female , anonymous writes:

Me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex a few days ago. He pulled out before he came but I'm wondering if I could be pregnant. I am on birth control (diane35 for skin issues) but I don't always take it at the same time every day due to a very busy schedule. Will this have an affect on the effectiveness of the pill?

thanks

A female reader, Wendyg United Kingdom +, writes (24 July 2006):

Wendyg agony auntIt depends if its the mini pill, this has to be taken pretty much at exactly the same time every day, its a pretty time crucial pill and has more margin for error if not taken correctly. The cominbined pill, you do get up to a 7 hour window where you will be protected, but its really not recommended as this can reduce the reliability. So its always best to take it at a time you know you will remember or will have time, set yourself so that you can take it say lunchtime if your mornings and evenings vary, so long as its not a drastic timescale then you should be okay. I take mine at 8am -9 am every day, thats the time i leave the house so take before i leave, on a weekend i will take it maybe say 10 as i will have a lie in. but i have never left it longer than that just in case. But reading my instructions it does say that if you forget a pill but take it within 7 hours of when its due you are protected, but dont leave it too long just to safguard yourself. This time around dependant on how late you are taking your pill (if only a couple of hours) she will probably be okay especially as you say he pulled away. If you have been taking it pretty much with in a couple of hours you shouldnt need to worry. I have been on the pill for 15 years, with a break of course and have always been okay taking it the way i do. But also remember if you have a stomach upset or take some antibiotics it reduces the effectiveness of the pill, so take extra precautions for 7 days.

Hope this helped

Take carex
