Is this the only time you've hit someone? There is no excuse for violence in a relationship at all. Not even during a fight.
All you can do is apologise for slapping him once he has cooled down and see what he says. Just be prepared that it might be over.

The best you can hope for at this point is that you get some therapy and gain him back as a friend. Count yourself lucky he hasn't pressed charges against you.

When you think about it if he had slapped you i bet you would have kicked him out and ended it with him.
Like eyeswideoped said you should get help for this even if it was only the once, and maybe it will give you a better chance if he can see that you are doing something about it.

I think you blew it by turning violent. Maybe if you get some anger management therapy he might reconsider but just apologising probably won't cut it, and that's as it should be. If you slapped him once you will slap him again unless you get a handle on your anger. Look in the phone book and find that help.
