He always used to talk about how special that time was when he got to see her. He's expressed he's got a difficult situation with the child's mom. I decided to send him a card telling him happy early father's day and that I saw him recently in our neighborhood and wanted to wish him well. I haven't heard anything from him. Did I do something wrong?

He might even worry that you are trying to send him a message that he has more children than he thinks he does. Or that you'd like him to be the father of the child you are planning.
Next time, buy yourself some nice paper, a nice pen and write a short letter. Then the only messages you send are the one's you intend.
