A male United States age 51-59, anonymous writes:

Been dating my girlfriend for about 6 months. When we first started dating she told me one of the reasons her first marriage didn't work was because her husband got them in credit card debt. She told me then that she tried to pay off credit cards at the end of each month. About a week ago I saw one of her statements lying on her desk and the total debt on the card was over $25k? I asked about it and she got defensive. What now?

I can honestly say that if she was honest about it to you from day one then it is up to you if you want to stay with her. If the amount has been kept from you then i would have a long chat with her and ask her just how much she owes. If she lies then it is up to you what you do next, but personally i would run like hell. Money is the root of all evil and this can seriously damage a relationship. I knew a bloke who had loads of debt, took all my money, wouldn't work and i got out of it. I just couldn't stand never having any holidays, money and even essentials (washing machine), so i went.

Take care

xx

Well, she is responsible for her husband's debt since she was married to him and if he is not paying for it, she is because she does not want her credit ruined, she was honest and told you that she was in debt, I guess you could of asked her how much. The responsibility of course is hers to figure out how to pay this debt off, she should not be paying off any other credit cards monthly, as it would be best not to use them at all....

She could try to negotiate with her bank for a lower interest rate, or a payment plan that will help her to pay off her debt quicker, or seek some financial counseling...I don't recommend debt consolidation companies as that does affect your credit rating negatively.

What now? I don't know how to answer that for you.
