I thought he was going to ask me to marry him but obviously he didnt, he doesnt realise thats why i was upset. He has always said he doesnt believe in marriage so i should have known better but he said a few things like hes changing his mind on that one since he met me,etc. Now i just feel horrible and stupid, how do i make it up to him?

The difference between men and women in an argument situation is that men can just pick up like nothing happened and carry on whereas women need some kind of resettlement, reassurance, redemption period so they feel secure enough to rekindle.
If you feel like you are in the wrong, you will probably have to swallow your pride, let things drop without digging him for a discussion and pick up and carry on like nothing happened.
You thought he was going to marry you...well you know what thought did!!! Followed a muck cart and thought it was a wedding (old saying, for someone who assumes too much and gets the wrong end of the stick).
Keep calm...carry on, that's what I would do.
