A male reader, Tom251 United Kingdom +, writes (14 August 2008):

I had the same problem with my girlfriend. There are many things to combat this I find.

The first thing to do is spend a day or two appart and hang out with friends or family, so when you meet up after that you can talk about what you did etc, it works for us sometimes.

Another thing to do is find common interests. Me and my girlfriend both like to watch shows like friends and lost, invest in a boxset and spend a few hours watching them, you'll talk about the episodes etc, we talked for hours about lost.

Plan day trips or things to do. The other day my girlfriend and I make a few pizzas and a sheppards pie. It was great, I learnt something and we had a lot of fun all afternoon figuring out how to do it.

I hope my advice helps. And I hope it goes well.
