writes: heres a question i pose to american and canadian residents who know about marriage laws etc.if one is legally married in us but not legal us citizen is actually canadian and after 5 months of marriage in us leaves and hasnt seen spouse for just round 11-12 yrs nor spoken to him, and then currently meets a man she wants to marry in canada. will she get in any legaL trouble i.e bigamy, etc in canada for being married to us guy? thx Reply to this Question Share |

reader, anonymous, writes (22 April 2008): YES! .....but only if you're found out! The US nor Canada cross reference marriage records. If you check with any state within the US....you will find that EVERY SINGLE bigamy case was brought up when a spouse/ex-spouse brought up the case. YOU MUST be reported by someone to become a bigamist and then the background check will be done, but YOU must provide the info.
You can't say that Robert So and So was married back in the US.....YOU MUST be able to provide the law/court with the his name, her name, the state were he was married in and the exact year or there will not be an investigation.
So if you are in Canada and want to marry again...then do so, but don't tell anyone about your past marriage.
