Definitely not a relationship question but sometimes help and inspiration come from the most unlikely sources....

One of the hobby groups I'm in has an annual "long weekend away" shindig (party) which is coming up in about 3 weeks. Everybody who attends is expected to do some chores while we're away and this year one of mine is to prepare one of the vegetarian options for a meal on Saturday night.

The party has a different theme every year and, where possible, we try to reflect this in the food we serve. I usually have great fun doing this but this year I'm totally stumped. The theme is "The Circus"

I spent all last trawling the internet for ideas but the only stuff I kept coming up with was for snack food - popcorn, pretzels, toffee apples, candy floss etc or for hotdogs and burgers.

Can somebody suggest something bearing in mind a few issues

1) The meal has to be vegetarian (which is why hotdogs and burgers are out)

2) The meal has to be substantial - there won't be the opportunity for people to "have something else when they get home" (which is why snack food like popcorn and pretzels are out - it's hardly a filling and balanced meal.)

3)The party is for people of all ages NOT a children's party although there'll be plenty of kids there (lots of the stuff on the internet was aimed at toddler parties - cakes, jellies, etc)I'm making the food for adults.

4) The meal should cater for about 8 - 12 people

5) The theme is "The Circus" but this can be interpreted very loosely

6) The meal needs to be prepared in an open field with NO ELECTRICITY so the food needs to be cookable over Primus stoves, barbecues or an open fire. Lack of electricity also affects storage options as there's no fridge so I don't have the option of making something at home and bringing it along as it would have to sit in a coolbag for four days before it was served.

Just need some ideas........ please

HI THIS IS THE OP

Thanks everybody for such great suggestions. I never thought I'd get so many.

I loved the idea of the sword-swallowers kebabs. And as for the curry/stew ideas, at first I thought it wasn't circus-y enough but I can call it fire-eaters stew!!

And if i can find a good recipe for bread cooked on a barbecue I might make some "Bearded lady baps"!

Ooooh, I'm all excited now!

Thanks once again folks. I knew I just needed my imagination nudging.

Xx-Scorpio-xX agony auntbeing veggie myself, i'd also go for vegetarian substitutes for a BBQ like quorn and linda mccartney range :) tescos meat free stuff is also very tasty :) baked sweet potatoes with cheese and beans? make some vegetable kebabs-chop up onions peppers etc and put onto sticks to grill :) get some colourful sweets (no gelatine) and biscuits (maybe like party rings or animal biscuits) for nibbling and popcorn and pretzels too :)

I think the idea of a vegetable curry is brilliant, or even use a jar of korma or curry sauce. Made with diced peppers, onions, carrots, mushrooms and pineapple if its curry, and serve with either noodles or rice. It is the simplest dish I can think of, and still slightly "exotic". Dont stress yourself out too much

Macaroni cheese or other pasta or rice dishes can be made in a primus

Dear OP,

I'd also go for a vegetarian barbeque. There are veggie burgers, also there is cheese which can be grilled, baked potatoes, even veggie sausages. To make the meal more substantial, you can bring salads, add desserts like the apples you mentioned (can be cooked over a fire), marshmallows for the kids to hold on sticks and melt in the fire. However, that you don't have any electricity makes the whole thing quite difficult. I mean, even veggie sausages would have to be cooled..

now another option would be to go for an "exotic meal" (because circus is something exotic) and cook a vegetarian curry with rice or noodles. You would need rice, veggies, coconut milk, spices, which can all be stored without a fridge. You would need one or two big pots to cook the food. It would be better if you could add meat or tofu, but without a fridge, it's not possible. You could also bring flour and make a dough and bake little pieces of bread on the barbeque, to accompany the meal.

Have fun, dear, and don't be afraid to ask others in that group about their preferences if you're not sure. I think it's great you are so into organizing, but don't let the pressure take away the fun.

olderthandirt agony auntGriled Prtabellas and grilled pineapple rings are super easy and super traditional. Use plenty of Soy sauce on the pineapple for an extra glazed effect.

CindyCares agony aunt I don't see why you could not have VEGAN burgers - seitan burgers, or tofu burgers. Perfect for the barbecue .

Just google " seitan burgers " or " tofu burgers " and you'll find plenty of recipes.

Or else, prepare vegetable skewers ( tomato, pepper, onion, eggplant, ... ) and call them " the swordeater's veggie delight " :)

Wow, sounds awesome!

Try this out, you'll need to make double what I tell you to feed 12 people but it should be easy enough to do with a BBQ:

BBQ halloumi cheese on skewers - cut them into little squares (you'll need 2 packets for 12 people). Maybe put some mushrooms on the skewers for a little something extra. Boil some plain white rice over a stove and add some sort of flavouring to it, toss in some peas and diced carrots. Maybe get some quorn (not sure if you can have it because of the fact you're in a field but the option is there) - you could even add an option of homemade macaroni cheese with a pinch of black pepper to spice things up.

It's all really simple and quick to make and it'll taste great, you could even add vegetarian colouring to the food to make it a little more 'circus' themed. It'll look awesome with some blue rice or something. But the main this is that it's all easy and suitable to do in the middle of a field with no electricity.

Hope you enjoy your shindig!

clown shaped veg cake

u can make rolls and place them together making it look like rope

u can make sandhwiches n cut bread in tent shape

n keep all these things together

this makes it a complete circus.
