Speaking as guy in highschool, yeah it happens. Though it is more common the other way around. It is also quite normal for you to lose interest since he doesn't seem all to interested in you. I really can't tell what would be the best way to be freinds. From what you said, I gather that you two don't talk much and don't know each other very well yet; which is probably why he freaked out in the first place. Finding out that a girl he doesn't know is interested in him after he did a favor for her is not always taken very well.
But anyway, a normal conversation wouldn't hurt. The important thing is to not come off as obssesed; that wouldn't be good. If it really means that much to you, go and talk to him.
