I am an aspiring filmmaker and I think Scotland will offer more artistic outlets and the ability to live in France at some point to get further experience. But this is very upsetting to my family, since I could finish my degree in 1 1/2 to 2 years here and they feel I have wasted so much money already. Scotland would be a commitment of an additional 2 years and a substantial amount of money, but I feel maybe wrongly that Scotland might offer more in the long run.I am not so young, I am 23. And while that might not seem very old to many of you, when you factor that it will take me 4 years to get my B.A. and 2 yrs to get my Master (total of 6 yrs or more); I will be 29 or 30 when I enter the work force and I find that really really scary. I would also be over $100,000 in debt at the end of it. And, because of the economic crisis...who knows if I will be able to get a student loan to go to grad school once I am already $ 100,000 in debt.I don't know what to do. I really don't know how to make the decision and I am a little emotionally fragile from the argument I just had with my family. I need some help.

Scotland is lovely, I am there next week.
But it's not the film makers paradise that you think it is. Most of the time it's wet and freezing. You will need a job to support yourself and for that you need a degree.
Lock Ness is not going to dry up in the next year and a half.
Finish your education. Then you can get a job over here and move here to start making films.
You need to do a lot more research from the sounds of it.
Do your degree, and in the mean time make a plan. Do you know where in Scotland you want to live?
Have a look at rent and prospects.
Try www.rightmove.co.uk.
If you are desperate to come over then why not come and visit first. Come to the Edinburgh International Festivals which run through August, or the Film Festival.
Get a summer job somewhere which will:
A) give you a chance to get to know the place
B) help you pay back some of that cash as you go along.
Have a look at rent and chat to other people while you are over here.
Get your BA and then come over here to study your masters degree.
You need something behind you before you move.
Good Luck!! xx

You might then be able to do work in the UK and actually get paid for it while learning a lot. I would love to live and work in Scotland if I were your age again. Two years may seem a long time now, but, believe me, it is not. I had to make a decision about the military when I was your age. It was a requirement at the time. My parents wanted me to go to college, but, I wanted to get the military thing done and then have my own money for college. I won the argument. I was really much better prepared for college work and graduate school because of it. You have to consider all angles and be ready to convince your family. Best wishes.
