So far we've been on mutually respecting terms and there has been negligible, if any, sarcasm. The other day I made a statement I wasn't sure of (on some topic we were discussing) but he got me there and there was no end to my embarrassment. He was especially harsh and sarcastic about it. I felt really horrible and I've been thinking he'd take me to be really dumb. Oh btw he is super intelligent. Just dont know how to get things to feel normal, because my confidence has taken a total dive.

Perhaps he was being overly sarcastic because you are friends and he was demonstrating his biting wit.
It can be difficult to judge the meeting point of sarcastic humour and insult.
Is he a polymath or just well read?
Try not to overthink the event as you expressed yourself well enough in your posted query, so you can't be that stupid. Don't beat yourself up too much.
