He has told me he needs his space at the moment and that he does love me and doesnt want to lose me. But yet he comes to me and talks after wanting this space. How should I handle the situation? I love him more than anything and dont want to lose him, but I am hurting too by being bounced around on a string...

Give him the space when he needs it and be there for him when he needs you, he is going through a terrible time and having to come to terms with his illness, he may not want to burden you with it and may feel that he just needs a friend at this moment in time.
I know it must be hard for you but he is ill, is it a mental illness or physical? you can get help for yourself if he is attending a hospital, they have people for family and friends to talk to, maybe you could talk to one of your family just to off load as I do realise that being in a relationship with someone who is very ill is a strain on both of you and not easy, just give him space and comfort him when he needs you. good luck
