 can you ask maybe who he's been dated in the past? who his dream person is? some sort of open ended question where his answer would be a person with a definite sexual orientation?
if you tell him everything and really trust him as a friend, you could tell him you are gay and see what his reaction is?
i know how hard it is. a gay guy friend of mine had a big crush all year on a guy who we STILL aren't sure about. there were rumors, but then again there always are!
