 How old is your brother? Chances are he is only being protective as you say, but you have a life to live aswell. He needs to learn this.
It probably is difficult for him as it is his best friend, but that is something fo him to deal with and not make you suffer because of it. You need to stand up to him and just voice your concerns. being protective is good but smothering is bad.
You should feel be fairly lucky to have a brother who looks out for you like this, but over stepping the boundary into your life too often is unhealthy.
