 Why not talk to your friend first? Tell him about your feelings for this girl and how she makes you feel and that you don't want to act upon anything until you had a talk with him incase you was hurting him.
(but in your more macho way of course;)
There's no harm in trying and that way you know for sure instead of just throwing something away, I'm sure if he's a true mate he'd understand that she obviously wasn't interested with him and she is with you, and someone will deffinatley at some point come along for him, himself when it's the right time.
If he's mature enough he'll understand, if not then it's your deccission whether he or she is the worth the hassle.
