I'm looking in to getting a nose job, all through my childhood i have been so self conscious of my nose, i am a pretty girl but the only thing that lets me down is my nose. Everyone i know says they like me the way i am but im certain i want a nose job. I just want to be confident and happy. What advice can you give me? And is having a nose job dangerous?

Honestly, I had one and I am glad I did. It did make me feel more confident, as bad as that may sound. If you do decided to do it, make sure you research your doc and that your breathing is not compromised over aesthetics.

I posted another answer here which wasn't put online for some reason so I'm going to answer again. I would advise not to do this. You said you're pretty so obviously you are happy in some way with your looks- I think this is psychological issue. Get some counseling to see why you're so insecure that you have to change your nose to feel ok with yourself? The only reason to do these surgeries imo is for reconstructive issues or if you have some sort of physical impediment due to your nose.

Rhinoplasty is actually pretty complicated and in many cases they fracture the bones in your nose to change the shape. You may end up with a nose that is out of proportion to your face or some other horrible results. Many people who had rhinoplasty regret it because it totally changes their whole appearance in a bad way.

Your nose was made for your face shape with the correct proportions. When you change your nose your whole face is going to look different and often out of balance/proportion.

To go a good and reputable surgeon who is experienced and an expert at rhinoplasty you have to go to the very best which is VERY expensive. Even then we have seen the results of botched and too many surgeries and treatments(not only rhinoplasty) on celebrities and others who also never needed any surgery in the first place.

Any surgery carries a health risk, especially if you're having a general anesthesia.

sugarplum786 agony auntThe only thing I want to add is that there is always a risk that the surgeon could mess it up or you not be happy with the outcome. Also beautiful actors and actresses have had their plastic surgery go bad. So make sure you are prepared to accept the risks.

I had cosmetic surgery which was not a success. My advice is to look into the very best person to do this surgery, regardless of cost. I see you are in the UK, so perhaps start with your GP. It could be that your nose is actually alright but that you have pinned your problems on that one aspect of yourself which counselling could help. Either way, I think your GP is the first step.

CindyCares agony aunt Rhinoplasty is not a complicated operation , I would not call it dangerous. Yet, according to the nature and extent of intervention, it might have to be performed in general ( not just local ) anesthesia and any anesthesia entails risks. It really depends from how much you think this operation is necessary, and anyway if you have a consultation with a reputable plastic surgeon he will explain you everything in details about pros and cons. (Not all plastic surgeons are just money - hungry and knife - happy, a good professional will disadvise the operation if he feels in your case it's not strictly necessary and the cons - or the costs - would outweigh the benefits ).

You should be clear about your motivations , though.

I am not at all against cosmetic surgery, I don't think there's anything wrong if you want to improve your appearance, it's like shedding 20 pounds if you are overweight, or dyeing your hair in a different colour that complements your eyes .

BUT, it's a matter of expectations. If you are more or less comfortable in your skin, and reasonably happy with yourself in general, not only concerning looks, go ahead , nothing wrong in feeling already OK about yourself and wanting to upgrade it to feeling great.

If the nose is sort of a symbol of what does not work... if you, say, are depressed, or socially akward, or painfully shy, or just not that happy in general, and think that changing your nose will change your whole life, and turn you into a totally different personality who will magically attract luck, men and riches.... then no, you'd have gone through the trouble and the expenses for nothing.

But that ,though, you can clear it to yourself during your consultation with the plastic surgeon, a good plastic surgeon is always somewhat of a fine psychologist too...
