A male reader, anonymous, writes (13 April 2009):

Tell him, honestly, that you don't love him, but you do like him as a friend and really enjoy his company and hope that he understands and that you can carry on being friends. He will hurt for a while, but I'm sure he will understand.

ArmyMedic agony auntBoys are a nightmare for falling in love with their "best" female friends. The only thing you can do is tell him that you don't feel that way about him.

It will hurt him for a while, but he will get over it in time. What you must NOT do is give him mixed signals or hint that you don't like him now but you might one day, we all know that isn't true and you can't give the poor boy false hope.

You need to be honest with him so he can move on.
