writes: i am 13, i am not sexually active, i am not pregnant, i am stressed, i am underweight, i have been on a diet recently, i excercise daily for about 1 hour, i am low in iron, i am weak, and i missed my period for about 5 months now... my friends are telling me i mmight be pregnant but i know that i am not because it would have hurt and i never had sex before... i do get cramps sometimes...but i am just too embarresed talking to anyone about it... i had my first period on dec 23 2009 and its may 25 today and i didnt get it yet... i beleive that its cuz of stress and my diett and weight changes but my friends tell me to visit a gyno but i am too embarrased and scared... please tell me if im fine!

You're underweight and you were on a diet?What do you wanna look like?Anyway,you've only started your periods so they're quite irregular at first.I started my period 2wks after my 13th bday and that was in october.I didnt do in november,i had them in december.Then i didnt have them again until the next december.After that,i would have them after skipping a month,then they just started coming every month.I dont think its anything to worry about but you can visit the gynacologist if u want peace of mind.You could go to a gyna outside your town if you're too embarased.At 13,your body is still going through changes,you havent finished puberty and you're adding some body parts such as boobs,hips and even height.Therefore gaining weight is inevitable,dont punish yourself with diets when your body isnt mature yet.You can continue with your exercises though.All the best!

if you have been starving yourself to lose weight (dieting) then your body will reach a point where it is not capable of sustaining a second life (baby). this is syptomatic of very low weight/poor health and if you havn't had sex it makes sense your dieting is messing up the regularity of your periods. try to eat more healthily or see a doctor as this is a bit of a warning sign from your body to treat it better.

reader, anonymous, writes (26 May 2010): I would agreew with you - you are not pregnant. Dieting, over exercising, stress and even age can effect your period. When my parents divorced i didn't get a period for 7 months due to stress, i wasn't sexually active either and i was 22. I would be careful about the dieting and exercise if you are already underweight, i would say they are most likely the reason why your period has not come back again. Try to limit the exercise and perhaps eat a little more if you can - no doubt your period will come back when its ready and if you are really worried, tell a doctor/oarents what you just told us and they will confirm you are not pregnant.
