I am only a nursing student, but I am actually researching chronic otitis media and all the pathology, and surgical asspects of this condition. I can tell you that by having a perforated ear drum not only is your hearing possibly going to be compromised but this is an opening for bacteria and infection. These infections, if left untreated, can spread and then start involving other parts of, well, your face and head. The mastoid can become infected and then you might need a mastoidectomy, trust me this is much worse than a tympanectomy and can cause facial paralysis. ther is lots of information about what to expect when haveing an tympanoplasty that you can look at just google the term tympanoplasty. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon and of course I hope I was of some help to you.

I had problems with my ears when I was younger, I had a surgery and it went fine. Kind of glad that I did it because now I rarely have ear infections.

Hi there, I work as a medical secretary for the ENT department at my local hospital. While I am not a doctor, what I do know is that leaving 2 perforations on both ear drums most definitely WILL cause you problems in the long run. Firstly, they will most likely become infected. They will also get bigger, which then causes more damage to the ear drum and your hearing will deteriorate quickly. Tympanoplastys are not anything to be afraid of. They are short procedures and you are put under a general anaesthetic. Many patients I have seen benefit from this operation. Your hearing is valuable to you and once it has gone you may never be able to repair it properly. Also, if you are too afraid, I advise that you go back to the consultant and ask him/her to go through it all again with you. They do not mind as this is their job.

If you don't have it, long term hearing can be obstructed. My son had to have the tubes put in his ears when he was young. I thought he was hearing just fine. After it was done, I bet that was the first time he'd heard a heater in our home turn on. Surgery is a scary thing to go through. But it's sometimes necessary. I wish you well. Take care.
