Call me stupid, sheltered, or whatever, but it wasn't until this past May when I went to the gyno for the first time that I found out that cold sores are literally oral herpes. I asked my doc about it, and she flat out said that it was no big deal; "don't let the "herpes slash HPV title scare you," she said. Okay, so whatever, I have oral herpes but it's just stupid cold sores that almost everyone I know has. So, I got over it. I will be visiting my ldr in January for 3 months and, of course, we'll both be tested for everything before anything happens--I'm a virgin and he claims he is, too, but I just want to be sure I'm safe. Now, I found out that oral herpes can be transmitted to the genitals!! I'm freaking out...a. If I have a cold sore and touch it, and then touch myself, can I literally give myself genital herpes? b. Can it be transferred even when I don't have a cold sore? To myself, or to my partner?c. I don't mean to be all graphic, but can I transmit it through contact with his testicles too? What about the skin around his penis and sack--say I kiss it or whatever, and his equipment rubs against it, can he get the virus that way?!?!I grew up knowing absolutely nothing about this...and I can't seem to find the info on transmission easily. Am I screwed from ever giving my partner safe and satisfying oral sex?? :'(

It is true that oral cold sores are associated with a mild form of the herpes virus (Herpes simplex), but as you say, many of us (about 80 percent) have occasional bouts with a cold sore which is usually quickly healed with a Nystatin cream. Use it right away whenever you even feel an itch at the corner of your mouth.
In other words, in the Western World including Europe, and throughout East Asia, most of us have already been exposed. The strain is not very serious. Kiss or suck away as long as the sores are not active.

Its best to look this up on the internet or speak to your doctor as we are not tried medics on here. My son suffered from cold sores but they disaapeared themselves having used treatment for a while.
Speak to your doctor.
