Question about my new girlfriend. We have just started seeing each other and I really like her, we have started getting intimate but she pulled away the other night and said we need to be careful because she has just come off the pill, when I asked why, she said the doctor advised her to come of it because she was feeling dizzy and the pill was the only medication she was on and because she had been on that typeof pill for so long she should come off it for a couple of months then she will start a new pill. I don't want to question her but I have never heard of this before.

DrPsych agony auntThe doctor may wish to find out if the pill is the cause of the dizzy spells (which is a side-effect of certain brands). It could be that something else is causing it, and if her symptoms do not go away then the doctor may wish to order further tests. You should advise her to go back to the doctor if she still feels dizzy after she stops the pill. I think she has been responsible in telling you about her contraceptive status and I don't think there is a reason not to trust her. You have to be careful though now she is unprotected.

A female reader, Titchy United Kingdom +, writes (7 May 2010):

There are different types of the pill and it is common for a woman to change which one she takes according to what is needed at the time. It is highly plausible that if she says she has been advised to come off her current pill in order to start the other one it she is telling the truth. The body will need time to adjust before the new pill is introduced. I would believe her, though if she doesn't start her new pill within a few months you could question her again.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (7 May 2010):

Yes, sometimes side effects occur a long time after you initially start taking the pill. Also, if you have been on the pill continuously for months (as is the case for certain disorders such as endometriosis) then the body DOES need a break.

It could be that your gf has taken the pill for a while now, started experiencing side effects and her doctor has put her on a different pill. Before starting the new pill she is going to take a break.

I suggest you be a bit more supportive and a little less paranoid.
