Instead of going up to him and asking him out, why don't you make a friend out of him, and maybe do some light flirting to subtly get it across that you like him. Try to catch his eye and hold eye contact with him for a while. Find excuses to gently touch him, maybe when passing, or taking something. Laugh at what he says even if you don't find it particulaly funny. By doing this you can get a pretty good idea if someone likes you back without asking them.

reader, anonymous, writes (6 October 2007): (smile) "The whole school will know". Know what, hon? That you said, "Hi, how are you"? I don't think they would really have much to ridicule you about. If they do, you go to a very strange school, or a school with very strange people. Take the plunge! Say, "Hi, how are you?", or some equivalent phrase. What is the worst that can happen? He doesn't answer back? Then you can write the turkey off your list and forget about him. Or, he could say something like, "Oh, OK, I guess", which leaves open possibilities for further communication. Surely, a sharp gal like yourself could see the open possibilities (lol). Go for it, hon. How do you know he isn't waiting for somebody to ask how he is?
