I have a crush on my best friend, but he told me that he likes a different girl. Do I tell him my true feelings?

A female Canada age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I met this guy last year, and we've been best friends since then. Tonight..he suddenly started a conversation about our crushes. He used to say I'm special and cute and all those flirty stuff, and I flirt back, but we both know we're joking. But the thing is though..I like him. So, today he mentioned this girl he really liked at school, and it was someone really special. We were webcaming so I obviously couldn't cry infront of him. I told him I give him my blessings, but my chest felt like it was being ripped apart. What do I do? If he suddenly gets with that girl then what about our friendship? Do I tell him my true feelings? Or should I just leave it the way it is?

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (13 September 2008):

It's a gamble.

If you tell him your feelings then you risk losing his friendship but you could get more.

If you get more and go out with him then you break up, then you've lost a boyfriend and a best friend.

It's up to you whether you want to take that chance.

Only you know how likely it is that he is going to like you back.

If you stay friends and he gets a girlfriend then yes you will see him less, and she might not be happy with him being so close to you, but you will still have that friendship.

Good Luck!! xx
