 First, stop calling yourself fat. Some guys go prefer weight challenged people. I use to be one of the skinny ones. But I've come to accept myself being a bit overweight. Once I reached my mid 20's my ability to maintain my high school figure disappeared.
Over weight, being skinny, hair color, eye color, it's all superficial. Beauty really does begin inside. I've dated people for their looks, first meeting them, then going out. I'll tell you, I'd rather be with a girl who's intelligent, and can hold a good conversation and has average looks and even a bit of extra weight, than with a gorgeous girl where the only conversation they can have is fashion, and they don't know anything else.
The problem I do have with your story is his lack of contact with you now. Having a girlfriend should not change your friendship. If it does, he's not being a good friend, and/or the relationship he's in is not a healthy one. You were his friend first, and even call him your best friend, so when his relationship fades away and terminates, who's going to be the one there for him? He needs to tell her that you're his best friend and all though they have a relationship going, he needs to respect the friendship he has with you.
Keep your head up, and always remember, overweight can be beautiful too, it's how you view yourself that will attract the right people your direction.
