I had unprotected sex on Saturday night, I am on the pill but was just finishing my period and had taken the first pill out of my new pack on that day. How probable is it that I could get pregnant? I don't want to wait until my next period to find out

Hi. It's probably best to make sure you don't ahve unprotected sex again. But, since you've already done it, you should have some form of morning after pill. The best idea is to go straight to a local Hospital and they should give you a morning after pill.

Next time remember to use contraception - even if you are on the pill you can't be too careful.

DrPsych agony auntThere is a chance of getting pregnant while being on the pill but it is unusual. I agree with the first poster in that you should be more careful about STD's as your pill won't help you there. If you have any concerns then you should ask your GP for advice or drop by a family planning clinic.

A reader, anonymous, writes (29 May 2007):

The birth control pill's protection is continuous throughout your mestrual cycle, it stops ovulation from occuring, simulating as if you were already pregnant...as long as you take your pill consistently every month, you will be protected....if you take antibiotics, you need to use added protection, condom and spermicidal foam.

I hope you did not have unprotected sex with a new man, I would be more concerned about contracting an STD.
