reader, anonymous, writes (15 January 2009): That's a long period! Sometimes long periods can be caused by fibroids - these are finger shaped fleshy bits that stick out form your womb and bleed. You should get checked by a nurse if this is the case.

 certain birth controls have been known to really mess with your cycle. Also any medications you take can have an effect as well. I'm not sure of what else, but one of my old girlfriends told me that simple things like stress can screw things up. Just go back and get checked at the end of the month and I think you will be ok.
