 I think in your position that anything is better than nothing. Try a smile and a hi and leave it at that. See how he responds. There's no magic fire way to five you confidence unless you can be sure he likes you and you can't even begin to find that out without trying to do so but fear not, it's not that hard to smile at someone, however nervous they make you.
