Men have an easy to hurt ego.
When things seem to be in a rut they like to be able to fix it and make it better.
My boyfriend always says he prefers to be the one to take care of me.
So by you fixing the car it made his feel a superiority complex possibly.
You did the right think. Trust me it is like a mans vehemency to ask for directions. They never want to look weak or needy in front of the person they care aabout.
