Question - (11 July 2008) 3 Answers - (Newest, 11 July 2008)
A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I have felt bad for most of my life - perhaps since I was 8yrs old. I have seen many many counsellers, shrinks etc over the years which has never made a difference. I did try using prescribed medication, anti depressants etc for a little while but again that made no difference. I came off those because I dont like the idea of those drugs in my body and long term consequences. I tried positive energy, healing, thining etc but never work, I tried finding religion, going to church etc again never worked either. I have tried to have a happier life/outlook encorporating "happy / enjoyable" elements but still the same. But no matter what I ever do or try, it always comes back to me feeling dreadfully unhappy .

I'm not convinced that there is always a "root reason" for feeling depressed. Some people are genetically more depressed than others and there isn't anything that pills are gonna do about that.

You may have tried this already, but you didn't mention it in the list. Have you tried daily exercise and sunlight? Just start off going for a 20 minute walk or run every morning, keep it up for a few months, and see if your mood is lifting. You can shake it up a bit with yoga, swimming, etc. according to your schedule.

If you don't think you could stick to it, perhaps a concerned friend or family member could be your exercise buddy at first.

Also, do you have a healthy diet full of greens and fruit, and do you try to follow a regular sleeping schedule? Even people with normal biochemistries can be brought into depression by lack of exercise, confused circadian rhythms, and poor nutrition (especially low folic acid in women). Some folks are more sensitive than others. The healthy living has to go on for a few months before the results are seen.

This may not fix everything, but exercise is known to be a cure for some types of depression. At least, your health and body image will improve, which will probably lift your mood several points.

Good luck, dear, and hope you feel better soon!

Anti-depressants are pointless, and if you can't believe yourself to believe something. Thats what I've found too.

Depression sucks doesn't it?! It hurts me to think people don't get the support and I have all the support in the world. Or did have anyway...

Try and list everything wrong in your life and solutions to them. If some clash, do the things that you won't be able to get over as easily. If consuellors never worked, I'd be interested to know possibly from others what the next step is.

Thing is your not mentally ill, so a mental home wouldn't work. Depression is a mental disease but, your not right for a mental home.

Maybe you should see a doctor. Maybe your brain is producing to much of a chemical. Sorry I don't know the specifics, but I have heard something like the brain produces a chemical to clear out your system or something and too much damages the brain and you get depressed - as you can tell I really DON't know.
