I said good-bye because I know that we cannot be together, and it was just the right thing to do. I love this man so much that I am willing to let him go if it is for the best. But I feel stupid for saying good-bye. What do I do? Should I feel stupid? (At one time... he was my teacher...)

Why feel stupid.. It sounds like you have taken a decision based on facts.. and it's your decision and you've taken it because of your reasons. and that is quite a mature thing to do. we don;t know details of your relationship i can only guess it was a very good friendship with a crush on your side. Perhaps after some time off you wll be able to get back in contact and take it from there as a good friendship again.
