A male reader, LazyGuy Netherlands +, writes (20 June 2008):

LazyGuy agony auntYou live in the UK which as far as I know does have a reasonable level of social welfare, try and find out what is available. There is no shame in asking help from the state, that is why we all pay taxes when we are doing well, as a safety net for when things aren't. One for all and all for one, that kind of idea.

You might be surprised to learn just how much aid is available. Even if you badly in depth you can be given aid to stop the worsted from happening and help you pay of your debts over time. ASK for help when you need it.

Finding work in the sex sector is easy enough, just open a newspaper and go the classifieds, they are always looking for new victims.

Wouldn't recommend it. Forget about stories of high class escorts pulling in several thousand pounds for a weekend. It sounds amazing BUT they have high costs (clothes, make-up, hair-dresser, etc etc) and only a handful of clients in a month. Basically you will be self-employed meaning you got to pay your own taxes from what you earn or do you think that taxman is going to just believe you are living of air?

Normal hookers working from a whore-house aren't going to have customers at their beg and call, you are there competing with all the other girls and there are LOTS of desperate women trying to make a living this way. Try and count how many johns you have to take at say 50 guid each to make a wage you can live on. Per day! You will also have to pay the house a percentage and again pay for your own clothes, hair etc etc.

Really, unless you manage to land some rich guy who you can count on you might well be making less then the check-out girl (who gets social insurance and has a contract and is getting work experience and whose wage goes up as she gets older not down) with the job benefit of any STD you care to have.

Go to your local government on Monday and ask for aid dealing with your problems, that is your best bet. Selling your body just ain't an answer.

But if you absolutely must, search for escort agencies and try to find one that seems decent and do some research, they are always hiring because churn-through is high, gee wonder why it sounds like such a lovely long-term career, and they the customers always want new blood.

Okay 'prostitution' is not formally illegal but solicitation is - which makes the task out on the streets illegal. Also it is illegal to pick the girls up in a car so unless doing it from a property or somewhere very shadey you and clients may be faced with prosicution as well as stds.the joys.

A female reader, Justmealone United States +, writes (4 June 2008):

Yup prostitution is a way to solve your money problems alright, because most likely you'll end up dead, because it's a very dangerous and violent life to lead.

Do anything and everything, before you resort to that ! I know someone who did it and caught an STD and it almost killed her, because she had an undetected medical condition, that the STD made 100 times worse, and it took her two years of fighting to be able to live normally again. You don't want that ! It will just take even more money from you.

Thank you Ms Strict, again you outline very clearly the real dangers and solutions that are involved.

Prostitution is not an easy choice to make, and the money you make comes with a big cost.

Follow the advice my advice or the advice of phiatiger if you want to make a lot of money easily and morally.

A female reader, Susan Strict United Kingdom +, writes (4 June 2008):

Susan Strict agony auntQuite apart from any moral and emotional issues, becoming a prostitute, in the UK at least, tends to be a downward spiral. As a journalist, I interviewed a large number of "sex workers" at various levels of the "profession", and I can say with absolute certainty that the only ones who really manage to get something worthwhile out of it are those who do it because they really enjoy it.

One of the problems you are faced with is that although prostitution itself isn't illegal, most of the associated necessities to do it safely are most definitely against the law. You can't, for example, pay anyone to look after you and make sure you are safe from the lunatics - and it doesn't take a genius to work out that it's the nature of the business that there are a far greater than average number of nutters among the clients who visit prostitutes. You stand a much higher chance than the average person of being robbed, attacked, beaten up, seriously injured or even killed. You also stand a much greater chance of contracting nasty diseases, and not just the sexually transmitted ones, however many precautions you take.

Prostitution works for those who go in at the top and stay at the top. If you already move in the upper levels of society and are quite at home talking with royalty and millionaires, wouldn't feel out of place dining at The Savoy or The Ritz, dress in designer outfits and wear expensive jewelery, AND really, really enjoy your work, then maybe you would have a chance. Otherwise, forget it. If you aren't there already, you are never going to get there.

A reader, anonymous, writes (4 June 2008):

Sorry phiatiger, but prostitution is not illegal in the UK, that's why I'm willing to provide advice in this area. But it is immoral and dangerous to the physical and mental health of anyone who wishes to carry out this activity.

All your other advice is spot on, and that's why it's only suitable for the rare individual with a thick skin, tons of intelligence and street smartness to do it for a short time and get out.......

A reader, anonymous, writes (4 June 2008):

Prostitution is illegal and not really the right road to go down hun. Its not the fun, exciting lifestyle that the telly makes it out to be. The men dont treat you to nice hotels to do the deeds, they use you for their pleasure in back alley ways littered with needles! If you think you have money worries now imagine when you are hooked on smack to cope with abusing your own body. You see its not just a job, it leaves mental scars and often puts women in very dangerous situations, along with mixing with the wrong sorts of person leading to other habits to dwindle your money on.

I feel you are intelligent enough to go and get a more appropriate job whether it be in a pub, shop etc or if it is male interest you are after why not work in a pole dancing club or something - I dont agree with it but at least its legal. I have a friend that picks up £300 a night (dont know what favours get her that wage) again you must have your witts about you, usually the men attending the club are married which comes with its problems and the people associated with the clubs are involved with drugs or have collegues that are. Just be careful. There are plenty of options for you. Dont give up. x

A female reader, anonymous, writes (4 June 2008):

Oh sweetie, the life of a prostitute is nothing like in the movies! It is a risky and very dangerous one - you will meet all sorts of perverted people and be expected to do the most degrading stuff. Unfortunately a lot of prostitutes turn to hard drugs to help them cope with their way of life - and if anything, drugs cause them to carry on with their way of life - they need the drugs to cope and to buy the drugs they prostitute themselves. It is a very sad situation. Rather take on a second job to try and make more money, but please sweetie, prostitution is not the way to go. I am a police officer and come into contact with prostitutes on a daily basis and their life is very hard indeed. Definitely not a good career choice!

Wait a second Aunt Audrey, not so fast. I'm willing to provide that kind of advice, if I'm sure that the person has good reasons, the intelligence and business sense to carry it off.

Looking at your post dear anonymous, this person dosen't seem to be you. Go and get yourself a second job, work in the evenings, get a full time job. Take in washing, learn to live within your means. The fact that your in money problems shows me that even if you get into the sex business you'll still have money issues. Contact the Citizens advice bureau and see if they can help you learn to manage your money better.
